What is Buzzsumo?
Buzzsumo is a website that will show you the most shared content, across four social networks, of any keyword or URL. When I first heard about it, I was unimpressed. So what? I thought. Google Analytics gives me the same information, doesn't it?
Turns out, no. It doesn't.
In fact, the keyword part of buzzsumo is arguably the least interesting way to use the website.
There are two far more interesting ways to use it.
First interesting way: what's the most shared content on your site?
Type your url into buzzsumo and see what was shared the most.
Can you write more topics like that?
For Profit Blogging's most shared articles, across the board, are the interviews. Everyone likes to read about people who have made money online. It shows beginners that there is hope for them, too. Which is almost entirely the point of this website. Demystifying the process so people who come across this site realize that it's not rocket science, this business of making money on the internet.
One of the other sites I own is Frugal Portland, a personal finance blog that helps people save money, spend consciously, and take control of their finances. I honestly had no idea which of my posts would be the top shared, and was really surprised when it came back that the review that was written about Republic Wireless was the most shared blog post this year.
So, it seems that the audience there likes reviews that are long and honest.
Takeaway: Write more about Republic Wireless, and write more reviews about things we use on a regular basis. Do not sugarcoat, because the audience wants honesty.
Second interesting way: what's the most shared content on other people's sites?
This is where you can fall deep down the rabbit hole.
Do you have blogging friends? Idols? Frenemies?
Admit it, you do. We all do.
Actually, if you don't know other bloggers, you're not doing this blogging thing right. You have to have friends who speak your language! Your real-life friends simply won't understand the language you speak. They love you, and they'll support you, but when you go running around talking about leveling up in your page rank, they won't know why it's a big deal.
Buzzsumo will tell you what's popular on any website you type in!
So, let's build you a year's worth of content that you know is shareable.
Find other blogs in your niche.
Type their websites into buzzsumo.
Now, see if you can write something similar.
It's not stealing. It's researching. Stealing like an artist.
Making sure you're not wasting your time with content that is uninteresting.
Try it, will you?
